On this episode we get ready for Christmas… again!
We are back today for part two of our three Part series of the 6 tips for preparing your home for the Christmas Holidays. Last week we talked about maintaining your backyard and also pest control. So, there’ll be a link down here somewhere, go back and checkout our last video Part One (.
Today we are going to cover the topics of checking your appliances and giving your home ready for the hot days.
Alright, so checking your appliances.
Now, your fridge first of all, you really want to check the temperature. You want to make sure that you’re on the summer settings because you may have been on the winter settings. Coming into the hotter months, you’re going to be using your fridge a lot more because there’ll a lot more partying, a lot more things happening and hopefully you have a lot more friends coming over. So, check your fridge, flick it onto the summer setting, and it’ll hopefully help you out.
Hopefully once again you will be having a lot of friends coming over, so check your oven and give it a good clean, because if you are going to be using these a lot more then you want to make sure they don’t breakdown on you the last minutes.
Now, this is actually a funny one because when we are writing this I can actually imagine this actually happens. So your fans, you want to check that if you haven’t used your fans then it’s not full of dust on top of you fans. Now I know you probably have really clean homes, but you can imagine, just picture it now, stop and think, really really dusty fans and someone goes and turns them then the dust are going to be everywhere. It’s actually a pretty funny thought. Give the top of your fan a bit of a once-over. So when you do turn them on there’s no dust going around the whole room for your kids to choke on.
Most importantly and hopefully you have air-con (Air Conditioning/ACU). You want to make sure the filters are clean. You probably will still be using your air-con during the winter months, but maybe you are going to be using a lot more on the hotter months. So, get up there, find where your filter is, take it down and give it a really good clean, and or maybe head over and check out your motor.
It might be a good idea if you may have an older motor, maybe just get the air-conditioning guys in. They just come and have a once-over before it gets too hot. During summer it’s the air-con guy’s busiest time because everyone’s using their air-con a lot and they do breakdown and things can happen. The last thing you want to be stuck with is a broken down air-conditioning in the middle of a 30 – 40 degree heat in the middle of a summer day with the kids at home. So, better get your air-conditioning checked and ready to go, because you really want to make sure all runs smoothly.
The Hot Days
Next thing is going to be getting your home ready for a hot day. We all know that the hot days are coming and it is a fact. So, what can we do to get our homes ready for the hot days? The first is when a hot day comes, you really want to keep your blinds closed. If you keep it more closed and you’re going to keep as much sun as you can outside of the home, and this is going to help when you start calling your home with air-cons or fans and the like. Also, another idea is to turn your air-conditioner on
Nice and early and just keep it a nice steady temperature throughout the day. Even if you may not be at home, there are settings on your air-cons that you can actually have it set into one temperature and it will turn your air-conditioner on and off. This will get you to that temperature, it’ll slow back down, and it’ll keep going on to keep it at one set temperature.
It may be a bit better idea when coming home in the afternoon to your house thinking it’s hot, you put your air-conditioner on and crank it really really cold and try to cool it down as quickly as possible. So that might be an idea or you can even use the timer function and have it set on a few hours before you get home, maybe let it go a little bit to the night – timer on or timer off, is also a good function to use with your air-con.
Also you want to check all the gaps under your doors. A lot of the front doors should already have this on. Check your laundry door and check all the other doors around in the house to make sure that anything on the external doors, it says the hot wind coming through. Just check all the gaps throughout your door, you get those little socket snakes that you can put underneath your doors.
Lastly we got to take advantage of the breeze at night. This is something that you know if you do not want to use your air-conditioner, you do have the option of opening up the windows and let in the breeze come in at night. This is more of a personal scenario, I can actually give you my personal opinion that I don’t like a breeze, I prefer the air-con. But if you ask my wife, she’ll advise the complete opposite. She loves to turn the air-conditioner off, open the windows and let the breeze come in. So, I’ll let you guys workout that one. She does win and the air-con goes off and the windows open.
Alright guys, so today we have covered checking your appliances and getting your home ready for the hot day. So, if you have anything that you wanted to add to these or you think that anyone will need in regards to checking your appliances actually just adding to that as well. You know you can get an Electrician to check all your appliances, and getting your home ready for the hot days.
End Part 2
You know what, I actually just thought of one. The hot days; pets, you really want to get things ready for your pets. Now I know lots of you may have pets, well one of our girls Aimee, she’s got a beautiful dog. Now, I know when the hot days are here she gets a bit bath ready, it’s like probably one of those shells that you can buy down at Bunnings and filled it up with water, so this is also another good idea too. It’s not only getting yourself ready for the hot day, but if you have any pets make sure they are ready and prepped for the day.
Alright, in the comments below I’d love to know what you love mostly about these. If you know anyone who could benefit from watching these videos, please tag them.
